Neeru Kumar (Fellow Member)

Traditional techniques, a contemporary sensibility, an innovative use of colour. This is the hallmark of designer Neeru Kumar’s work, acknowledged today as a landmark in the evolution of Indian textiles.  For hand woven textiles, Neeru Kumar is unquestionably one of the best and most creative designers in India.

Neeru Kumar is a graduate of the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad.  Two decades of dedicated work in the field of textiles, in developing, exploring, experimenting and innovating from the vast wealth available in India in terms of diverse skills, materials and references led her to evolve her own unique brand of textiles and textile products.  While basic handlooms and khadi are transformed by her into chic outfits for working women, her range of textiles and saris in silk and cotton have been specially woven by traditional jamdani and ikat weavers. Fine khadi cotton embellished with kantha work, silk appliqué, various techniques of dyeing and embroidery constitute a stunning collection of appeal to both the purist and the trendy.  Her unusual palette of colours, again, draws from the traditional but translates into the contemporary so that the yellow of mustard fields, the colours of the earth, charcoal black, a raging sunset mingle with ease among delicate pinks, cool mint and avocado green.  The textile products created by Neeru Kumar possess an extra ordinary quality.  The user will appreciate them for their practicality but will choose them above all for their beauty.

Neeru Kumar’s seamless joining together of two opposing sensibilities is what attracted buyers when she first entered the market thirteen years ago, and what has been established it since as one of the most creative and sought after labels not just in India but in discriminating market segments of Japan, the US and Europe. Another reason for its astounding impact abroad is that Neeru Kumar’s work doesn’t shout its origin aloud but deliberately adheres to the understatement, the unmistakable sign of excellence in design.

In the International market Neeru Kumar’s products are displayed at Maison & Objet fair in Paris, which is the leading trend setting exhibition in the world.  Besides, her products are sold under her own label ‘Neeru Kumar’ in leading stores worldwide such as Le Bon Marche in France, Liberty & Selfridges in U.K., Bloomingdale in USA in addition to working with designer labels such as Maki Textile Studio in Japan, Jack Larsen in USA, etc.  She has been featured in magazines like Vogue, Architectural Digest, Home Textile.

Her repertoire consists of two principle ranges: textiles for the home and garments for women and, men, both traditional and western.  Her fabrics are crafted into bedcovers, cushion covers, throws & wall hangings as also accessories such as shawls & scarves to complement her extensive garments range, which are immensely popular with all age groups and cater to both the high-end buyer and the down to earth one looking for utility, easy maintenance and value for money.

Neeru Kumar has establishes three of her own boutiques in New Delhi including one at the most exclusive Santushti shopping complex in chankypuri and the newly opened 1 MG. Road, and these are highly regarded by all discerning visitors, both foreign and Indian.
